Wednesday Folder – May 14, 2014

Happy Wednesday All!

The busy days continue as we get closer to the end of school. Three big events are coming up, first this Thursday at 6:00 p.m. join us in the Gym to watch the Dual Language end of the year performance. Check with your teacher for details for your class, but it looks like most kids in the show need to be at school at 5:30 p.m.

Then on May 16th, we will be hosting our first ever Young Artist’s Workshop! On Friday morning, students in 3rd, 4th & 5th grade will attend two creative workshops led by fifteen Austin artists. These students will have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of artistic presentations including drawing, painting, design, collage, ceramics, photography, music, woodworking, theatre, dance and even paper robots! Here is a description of the artists and workshops.

Students in Pre-K, Kinder, 1st and 2nd will attend exciting presentations by Creative Action, a team of professional artists dedicated to inspiring creative, social and academic development in students through interactive performances involving music, story-telling, puppets and theatre. After the morning workshops, all students will be able to expand their creative thinking with more art projects in their classrooms.

Next Tuesday, May 20th at 6 p.m. we have our annual party at Guero’s Taco Bar. It’s always fun to hang out in the garden with friends, food, and drink. This year proceeds from the event will go into our Camp Champions Fund. Every year 5th graders fundraise to make enough money to go on the Camp Champions retreat. This 2 day trip is a fun and team building experience where the kids develop leadership skills and learn about nature and themselves. However it costs money and every child is responsible for at least a portion of their cost. Some years it is more difficult to raise the required money and this past year the planned fall trip was delayed until spring in part because there wasn’t enough funds to cover the camp.

Our goal with this ongoing fund will be to support scholarships and discounts for THES students who need help with the financial obligation so that all children can participate in the annual Camp Champions retreat. Students will still be responsible for their costs but the fund will suplement their efforts and whatever is not used will rollover to the next class. That means that even if your children aren’t old enough to participate this year, their class will benefit from this fund when they are in fifth grade.

So many fun events!

Also a quick thanks for everyone who filled out the Thunderbird Directory information! Your participation will help make communication at our school even better. If you still need to fill yours out you can print out this pdf then return to the office or put in your Wednesday Folder, extras are in the office as well.
