HAPPY THURSDAY, THUNDERBIRDS! 05/12/2022

Have an announcement or other great news to share? Please submit your info to the school the week prior to when you’d like to see it in this newsletter.

PTA News!

Thunderboard needs YOU!

Thunderboard is our CAC (Campus Advisory Council). While PTA is a fund raising, support, and event based organization, Thunderboard is (as the title implies) an advisory council. Past Thunderboard activities have included: making THES an in-district Charter, creating our Four Pillars, updating our Four Pillars, and working with the district to find a new principal. Thunderboard meets monthly and we really need a diverse group of parents to represent all the wonderful faces that make Travis Heights Elementary the truly unique school it is. Here’s a call from our current Thunderboard Parent Chair:

The Thunderboard serves as the primary governance and decision-making body for campus-based programming at Travis Heights Elementary. Parents that serve on the Thunderboard help shape the current programming and the future of THES. All parents and guardians that live in the district and have a child at THES are welcome to apply for one of these positions. Download and fill out the Standard Membership Application here and return it to the THES office by Monday, May 16th. Time commitment is roughly 2-3 hours per month.

If you have any questions, or are interested and would like some help with the application due to language or technology issues, please speak with Mrs. Navarro or email thunderboard@travisheightselementary.com.

Volunteers for Thunderbird Fun Fest!
It takes a village! Especially to put on a free event for the entire school within a short time frame. Below you will find our ask for physical donations for the Thunderbird Fun Fest on May 20th, but now we are ready to ask for some of your time too. Please CLICK HERE to see our signup list and volunteer to take a turn helping at one of the many stations. PTA Board will be manning all of the “sales” areas, such as food and Thunderbird swag, so there will not be any money handling involved.

Donations for Thunderbird Fun Fest!
We are asking for some specific item donations, by grade level, for our Festival on May 20th. These items don’t need to be there until May 19th. Requests as follows:
Pre-K: Juice Boxes/Pouches
Kinder: Snack Bags of any kind – think Goldfish, Fruit Snacks, Pirates Booty, pretzels
First: Water (small 8 oz bottles)
Second: Juice Boxes/Pouches
Third: Small cakes/cupcakes/cookies for the cakewalk
Fourth: Water (small 8 oz bottles)
Fifth: Small cakes/cupcakes/cookies for the cakewalk

Thunderbird T-Shirts

This year, PTA was able to get a t-shirt for every Thunderbird. It wasn’t a small expense and we didn’t have our best Fundraising year ever (although big shout out to our team for what they did do! Not easy getting $$$ during a pandemic). So we have one small ask. If you have a shirt that still fits, if you are graduating from THES and have a younger sibling, or just have a younger sibling that can wear your previous shirt, please pass it along! Not only does this save PTA dollars, it’s also a great way to reduce, reuse, and recycle!!!
Save the Dates! Spring Fling will be May 20th and Guero’s Night will be May 24th. For more info or to get involved, email ptapresident@travisheightselementary.com.

Festival Of Colors

Over the next two weeks we will be celebrating everything about being a Thunderbird and closing out this school year! We will start with the Festival of Colors (FOC). This is an event designed to expand learning into our natural environment and expand our world views. We will focus on unity, pride in ourselves, and celebrating the colors of the season.

Be sure your student wears their THES t-shirts… we will be getting messy!

Thursday, May 19 for PK-2nd grade

Friday, May 20 for 3rd-5th grade

5th Grade Commencement

Attention 5th grade families!
Believe it or not, it’s almost time for our kids to finish their time at THES and move on to middle school.

SAVE THE DATE for a fun ceremony to celebrate our graduates: Friday, May 27, 2022 (the last day of school). There will be a ceremony in the gym with certificates and a slide show, starting at 12:30 pm. Parents are encouraged to attend, followed by a reception outside.

We would love for you all to attend, and look for more details soon!

We need VOLUNTEERS (CLICK HERE to sign up) to help come up with ideas, decorate, set up and clean up. If you can volunteer or want to donate or have questions, please contact 5th grade parent Melissa Livingston at melissalokelani@yahoo.com or text 512-773-5657‬

Wrapping up Poetry Month

To end poetry month, THES celebrated Poem-in-your-Pocket day on Friday, April 29! Librarian Mrs. Harris helped students make pockets and distributed free poems to go inside. Any K-5 Thunderbird that read their poem (self-published or borrowed) to five different friends on Friday received a sweet treat at the end of the day! In addition, 3rd and 4th grade classes had poetry slams throughout the day. Mrs. Harris set up an “open mic” stage and the students gave snaps after each performance. Find a photo album of all our poetic accomplishments here.

Awards Assemblies

Don’t forget! The End of Year Awards Assemblies will be held in the gym on the following dates during the last week of school.

Last Day of School
Friday, May 27

It’s hard to believe it is almost here! Please note, there is no early release on this day. Contact your teacher for the end of year celebration activities for their classroom. Report cards and supply lists for the next school year will go home on the last day. Happy Summer, Thunderbirds!

Central Texas Food Bank
United Way for Greater Austin – ConnectATX
Texas Health and Human Services – Call 2-1-1 or (877) 541-7905 to speak to a live operator.
