Wednesday eFolder – October 30, 2019

Happy Wednesday Thunderbirds!
It’s a busy week here at THES! Thursday wear your favorite storybook character costume…we will have a parade at 9am and parents are welcome to attend. We’ll kick off Friday with Upper Grade Assembly in the gym at 7:35am and then our school-wide Dia de los Muertos parade at 9am (more details on all below).

TICKETS ON SALE NOW!

Thursday, November 21
We invite you to join your student for a Thanksgiving turkey lunch at school! Tickets are required to eat the school provided lunch with your child and will be on sale in the lobby before school and at pickup October 29 through November 1 (cash only). Tickets are $4 for visitors (you only need to purchase a ticket if you plan on eating the lunch provided by the cafeteria). There are a limited number of tickets available so be sure to get yours! If you aren’t able to purchase tickets this week, stop by the office next week to see if there are any remaining tickets available.

Lunchtimes will be slightly different on November 21 so please check with your child’s teacher for their revised time. As this is the busiest lunch time of the year, please arrive early to find parking and check in at the office for a visitor’s badge (you MUST bring your ID if you’ve never checked in before).

STORYBOOK CHARACTER DRESS UP DAY & PARADE – this Thursday, October 31, 9am!
Students are encouraged to dress up as their favorite storybook character. Students who are dressed up will walk in the parade at 9am and parents are welcome to attend. To support students’ feelings of safety and security in our building, violent or frightening costumes are not acceptable. No weapons or dangerous-looking items will be permitted to accompany a costume. Accessories such as wigs, masks, face paint or anything that can be considered distracting are asked to remain at home. Books are a required part of the costume.

DIA DE LOS MUERTOS PARADE – this Friday!
Friday, November 1st @ 9:00 am

THES will host a school-wide Dia De Los Muertos Parade on Friday, November 1st @ 9:00 am. Classrooms are learning about the Day of the Dead holiday which is celebrated in parts of Mexico and Latin America at the end of October through the beginning of November. Special Areas and classrooms will be reading stories about the celebration, and grade levels will produce traditional artwork that is typically associated with this holiday. The students will be discovering that the Day of the Dead celebration is a jubilant and festive tradition that unites families and establishes a sense of identity.

It is a time for happy memories of loved ones, not scary stories! Please feel free to add to the two altars we have setup with loved ones that are no longer with us. We will have the altars displayed for two weeks, please write your name on any photos with your child’s name and classroom teacher so we know who the picture needs to be returned to once we take down the altars. I hope to create an exciting cultural experience for your child by incorporating the art and culture of Mexico and Latin America into our curriculum.

Contact the front office if you have any questions about the Day of the Dead celebration. Thank you for taking the time to appreciate what your child is learning and creating at Travis Heights.

Don’t let the flu knock you out of school! Free flu vaccinations are being offered at THES to all students. If you’d like your child to get a flu shot, please complete the attached consent form and return it to the school by that date. If you need a paper copy, stop by the office.

We are also in need of clothes hangers. Thank you!
