The Texas Legislature is meeting in special session now to consider private school subsidies, also known as vouchers or education savings accounts, and potential school funding increases. The special session is critically important as the legislature has a unique opportunity to fully fund public education and stabilize schools. Vouchers, however, would divert public funds to private schools, adversely impacting public education across the state, including here in Austin. Vouchers are opposed by public school advocates, school boards across the state and the Texas PTA.
One of the most effective ways to voice your opinion is by calling the House Public Education Committee Chair Brad Buckley and the House Speaker Dade Phelan. You can learn more about school vouchers from Raise Your Hand Texas, a nonpartisan nonprofit organization supporting public education. You can also read and sign the Austin Council of PTAs letter.
