Wednesday Folder – January 30, 2019

Happy Wednesday Thunderbirds!

We hope to see you at tonight’s PTA meeting in the cafeteria at 6pm (childcare provided). We will be discussing campus safety and security, and many other important things. Also, don’t forget tomorrow (1/31) is class picture day. If you wish to purchase your child’s class picture please send the order form and $10 with your child to school. Extra orders forms are in the office, or you can order online (school code 110507) and send the confirmation number + form with your child on Thursday. Lastly, Dual Language applications are due in the THES office tomorrow (1/31)! All items needed to complete the application packet can be found here.

Happy 100th Day of School on Friday — make it fun, dress like a 100-year-old!

Lower Grade Assembly

Friday, February 1
Parents are welcome to join. Assemblies begin at 7:40 and end at 7:55. Don’t forget to show your Thunderbird pride by wearing your THES t-shirt!

Project Based Learning (PBL) Showcase

Thursday, February 7 @6pm
One of the THES Four Pillars is Project Based Learning (PBL). PBL is a collaborative learning process that develops creative and critical thinking skills in all subjects.  Join us for a fun night of learning as students show off the PBL projects they have worked on this year!

I Heart THES Fundraiser

February 8 – 14
Show your school some love with this “NO HASSLE” fundraiser. Donation forms and envelopes will go out in next week’s folders. Simply complete and return with a donation, or go online to www.travisheightselementary.com/donate. Each donation will earn your child a THES bookmark and an entry into our fundraising contest. The grade with the most donations will win a popsicle party!  Also, remember to go to Home Slice on February 11th — they’re donating 10% of all sales — and Juke Automotive is matching their donation by 100%!

This year’s focus will be on Reading Support — funds for our Library, tutoring, software, training, ESL, and classroom resources that help every THES student learn to read at their grade level. Additionally, we hope to increase the school’s supply of quality reading material in multiple languages!

No School + Parent Teacher Conferences

Friday, February 15 / Monday, February 18
Mark your calendar – there is NO SCHOOL on Friday, February 15 and Monday, February 18. Friday is a DOI PD Day and Monday is Parent-Teacher Conference Day. All parents MUST have a conference with their child’s teacher. Please contact your teacher to sign up for an appointment! If you have NOT registered your child for the next school year, we will also have computers available for use on BOTH days to help you register!

NEED CHILDCARE?

Creative Action will be hosting day camps on both days at Becker Elementary! Have fun with friends through a variety of games, puzzles, art, and creative play, all led by Creative Action’s Professional Teaching Artists who teach at our after-school program. You do not have to be enrolled in Creative Action After School to attend. Register online!

Gifted & Talented Testing

The window for Kinder-2nd grade Gifted & Talented (GT) testing has opened. Testing will begin during the last week of February and projects will be completed at home during March! If you have a student that you believe possesses GT traits, please contact Mrs. Underwood to fill out a nomination form ASAP! julie.underwood@austinisd.org

HELP WANTED — STEAM Coordinators

Our annual STEAM Day (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) brings scientists, artists, and other experts to the classroom.  We need at least two coordinators to organize this annual enrichment opportunity for students. Duties include recruiting artists and scientists to lead sessions, arranging a performance/demonstration for lower grades, assigning students to their sessions, and coordinating logistics.  Time Commitment: 1-2 hours/week in months prior to the event (more the week of the event). Log on to our volunteering page for more information and other volunteer needs or email volunteers@travisheightselementary.com.

Advocacy Team Meeting

Tuesday, February 12 @ 5:30
Parents, friends, and neighbors are all welcome at our next Advocacy Team meeting at Travis High School (cafeteria). Our mission is to work and advocate with families in the school community, in partnership with neighborhood groups, to address issues of common concern. For more information, please contact advocacy@travisheightselementary.com

Questions, comments, or feedback?

Whether you want to get in touch with the THES Principal or the PTA, we want to make it easy for your voice to be heard! The PTA has a red comment box in the office by Ms. Guerra’s desk where you can slip in your comments or questions. Someone will come by and pick it up to share at the next PTS Executive Board meeting. Principal Navarro would also love to hear from you. No concern is too big or too small! You can reach her directly by visiting our Contact Us page and choosing Feedback in the My message is about dropdown menu.

If you would like to opt out of paper fliers, please be sure to check the box on the front of our child’s Wednesday folder. Please help us reduce waste and save money!
