Welcome back! Hopefully, you had a wonderful Thanksgiving break! We have a couple of amazing THES traditions coming up that we hope you and your families will be a part of—Tamalada and Cultural Fest.
Wednesday, December 5, 3–6pm
Get to know other parents and staff while learning how to make tamales in the THES cafeteria! No experience needed. There will be lots of fun activities for kids, and you will be able to come back and purchase tamales on Saturday during Cultural Festival ($12 a dozen). We still need more than 50 volunteers to make this event happen. Please sign up online!
Saturday, December 8, 10am–noon
We will celebrate the diverse cultures of Travis Heights Elementary with cultural tables, student performances, and a Mercado with local vendors. If you would like to host a cultural table or be a vendor at El Mercado, please fill out the red forms available in the office.
Also—we still need volunteers! Our awesome Cultural Festival Leader, Jennifer Barrera has to be out of town the day of the festival. She is helping to get all the details in place but we need a couple of people who can keep things running the day of the event. Please let us know if you can help with one of the following:
Cultural Tables: supervise set up and be a point of contact for the families hosting tables.
Performers: be a point of contact for the performers/MC, keep the schedule running smoothly.
Mercado: supervise set up and be a point of contact for the vendors.
Advocacy Team Meeting
Tuesday, December 4, 5:45–6:45pm, THES Library
We want you to join the Advocacy Team! Our mission is to work and advocate with families in the school community, in partnership with neighborhood groups, to address issues of common concern. All are welcome to come with a concern to share, or energy and interest in helping others in our school community. We work with parent leaders and families in the Travis Park, Lucero, and Heights on Congress apartments with issues like housing rights and immigration concerns. Holiday Attendance Reminder
This school year, Austin ISD changed their attendance policy in which vacation, travel time, and family trips are no longer approved as an excused absence. Please keep in mind that Travis Heights is still in session until Wednesday, December 19 and school will resume Monday, January 7. Thank you for being mindful when planning travel days.

Prospective Parent Tour

Recruitment is key for keeping our school at capacity and thriving! Please be a THES advocate and help spread the word about how wonderful the Thunderbird Community is by telling your friends, neighbors, and co-workers about our Prospective Parent Tours.
- December 7: assembly at 7:40 am in the gym and tour at 8 am
- January 18: assembly at 7:40 am in the gym and tour at 8 am
- January 29: tour only at 8 am

Ice Cream Social/Meet Your Teacher
Time: 3:30 pm-5:30 pm
Annual Back-to-School Ice Cream Social: Find classroom assignments and meet your teacher at this annual event. Come by any time after 3:30 and stroll through your classroom. The cafeteria will have information about the school available and ice cream/non-allergen icy pops available to cool off from the heat. Please plan on stopping by the cafeteria with your child.
The social is also a great time to bring school supplies to your classroom too! School supplies can be placed in a bag with your child’s name on it. Please do not place your child’s name on individual items/school supplies within the bag. If you cannot make the social, school supplies can be brought in the first week of school. Questions about supplies can also be posed to teachers at the social or during the first week of school as well, and purchased thereafter.
