Welcome to 5th Grade!

Our annual trip to the Outdoor School at Camp Champions will be held during the first semester this year.  We have the dates October 26-28 scheduled.

May

What’s coming up in 5th grade?

  • May 2-5 – Earth Camp.  This is a day camp where students learn about formation of landforms and the effects of human activity on living organisms.
  • May 13 – Field Trip to San Marcos:  Students will learn about more details about the water cycle.  They will also learn about how human actions impact the food web.
  • May 16 – Field trip to the Symphony.
  • May 19 – Tapestry Dance Company
  • May 20 – Family Fun & Fitness Day and 5th graders vs. Teachers Volleyball game
  • June 1 – 5th Grade Continuation Ceremony

What have we been up to in 5th grade?

Earth Camp

Students learned what an aquifer is, how water moves above and below the earth, and the effect of a drought on the aquifer.  They examined the life in a local creek and got to explore a small cave in south Austin.  They also learned about native plants and how they are beneficial.

Students looked at life in the springs and learned how water moves from the rocks under their feet u into the springs.  They learned about the effects of pollution and human activity on life in a habitat.  They played a game simulating the frog food chain, examined creatures of Central Texas, and toured the springs on a glass-bottomed boat.

April:

What’s coming up in 5th grade?

  • April 28 – Poem in Your Pocket Day
  • April 22, 29 & May 7 – Science Fridays.  We’ll rotate through science groups all day!
  • May 2-5 – Earth Camp.  This is a day camp where students learn about formation of landforms and the effects of human activity on living organisms.

What have we been up to in 5th grade?

  • In science, we’ve been working on our Life Science Unit.  We’ve been learning about:
    • The difference between learned and inherited traits.
    • Life cycles of animals, especially insects whose life cycles include complete metamorphosis and incomplete metamorphosis.
    • Adaptations that plants and animals have that help them survive in their environment
  • In Math, we’ve been reviewing our skills from the year and using them to solve multi-step problems.
    • Algebraic expressions
    • Addition and subtraction of fractions with uncommon denominators.
    • Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and Division of large numbers (into the billions place) and decimals (down to the hundredths place).
    • Comparing fractions, decimals, and whole numbers.

“My visit so far at Camp Champions so far has been amazing.  Today I got to go kayaking and do the high ropes course.” — Rowan

“It was my first time fishing and I caught 5 fish!” — Michael

March:

What’s coming up in 5th grade?

  • March 9 – Science MOY Benchmark Test
  • March 10 – Field Trip to Fulmore Middle School  <–Date Change
  • March 29-30 – STAAR Test
  • April 6-8 – Camp Champions:  Students will learn work on team building and learn about constellations in the night sky, review the rock cycle, identify organisms that live in Central Texas, and so much more!  Download Packets: English  Spanish

5th grade has been learning about fossils and how they are formed.

We made models of a mold fossil and a cast fossil:

In addition to all these, the 5th grade students are also exploring their options for Middle School including AISD’s Academic Magnet Schools. In the fall the school will alert parents to information presentations about this highly sought after program.
