Greetings Thunderbirds! eFolder – 06/08/2020

HAPPY SUMMER, THUNDERBIRDS!

AISD SUMMER SCHOOL OPPORTUNITY
As we finish this school year, we want to thank you for your flexibility and commitment to our AISD students. We also want to share information about some programming being offered in the days and months to come. Summer learning is an opportunity for students to recover any incomplete grades or credits. Completing this work will ensure a strong foundation for the 2020-21 school year.  We know the past few months have not been easy or ideal. As some students may be facing the possibility of an Incomplete as the year comes to a close, we want to be sure you are aware of a variety of options to help.

Below you will find a listing and description of learning opportunities AISD is offering. Campus principals have identified students who may benefit from this additional learning so you may hear (or have heard) directly from them.

Elementary School Summer Learning
AISD will offer a 5th grade Reading and Math Enrichment Program. This program is for students who received an incomplete grade for the spring semester in math and/or language arts OR those who did not meet Approaches Grade Level standards on the 2019-20 reading and/or math Middle of Year Assessments. Learning opportunities will be offered through online and paper packet options. Students will be selected by their home campus staff to participate in the program, which will occur June 15-30. The program will have 2.5 hours of learning activities Monday through Friday during the 12-day period.

July Elementary School (Pre-K-4th Grade) Learning Opportunities
During the month of July, students in grades PK – 4 will be invited to enroll in classes to remove their incomplete grades earned during the spring 2020 semester. These continuous learning opportunities will be offered July 13 through August 7. The program is designed to re-teach many of the core skills and competencies that all grade-level students need to be successful in the 2020-21 school year.

In this program, Pre-K-4 students will receive 1.5 hours of reading and 1.5 hours of math instruction daily for 20 days, during the period of July 13-August 7. Rigorous and enriching grade-level lessons will be presented through learning paper packets and online teacher-directed activities in these two areas. Activities will include recorded readings, virtual field trips, Social and Emotional Learning activities, and social studies lessons. Additionally, individual tutoring as well as individual learning time will be provided. All parents and guardians will be invited to participate in pre-recorded orientation sessions in late June. For more information or assistance, please visit https://www.austinisd.org/summer-learning or call the Department of School, Family and Community Education at 512-414-0112.

CONVERSATION CIRCLES ABOUT REOPENING
First meeting is Tuesday, June 9 at noon!

While we cannot be certain how the 2020-21 school year will look until we receive further direction from federal, state, and local authorities, we want to be prepared for a variety of scenarios. Your voice is an essential part of our considerations as we examine the possibilities for the 2020–21 school year. THIS WEEK the district is hosting a series of eight virtual conversation circle events to help us understand:

  • What you need to feel comfortable returning to work or school
  • What you would need to be successful if the district must continue some form of distance learning
  • What we might not be thinking about

Participants will also receive an update on where we are in the reopening planning process, and what we do and do not know for 2020-21. Event details and information to join via Zoom are listed below. We hope you will join us and share your valuable perspectives. Please note, to access the interpretation feature you will need to download the free Zoom app on your phone or computer.
