Happy Wednesday Thunderbirds!

Can you believe summer is almost here? There will be a lot of important information going home this week about the end of the year activities, summer events, and next year’s back to school info. Please encourage other parents to sign up for the e-folder so they can stay connected! Also, one more HUGE appreciation pump to all of the folks who made the T-Bird Fiesta at Guero’s a huge success—we raised over $6,000 to send THES 5th Graders to Camp Champions.

Family Fun & Fitness Day — this Friday!

Friday, May 17, 8-11am

Parents and students (PreK – 2nd grade) please join us for a morning full of fun physical activities and healthy eating! As part of the event, we are asking families to donate healthy foods to our snack station—and don’t forget your water bottle! Please send the following items to school on 5/17:

  • Pre-K: pickles (not sliced)
  • Kinder: bananas
  • 1st grade: Cutie oranges
  • 2nd grade: apples

Volunteers are needed! If you would like to volunteer, please contact Ms. Collins (512-414-3399, linda.l.collins@austinisd.org) or sign up online.

It’s hard to believe it is almost here! Please note, there is no early release on this day. Contact your teacher for the end of year celebration activities for their classroom. Report cards and supply lists for the next school year will go home on the last day. Happy Summer, Thunderbirds!

Buford the Book Bus

June 18, 10–11:30am

To promote summer reading and prevent summer slide, Buford the Book Bus will visit our school to give away free books. Please join us in front of the school to receive yours!

Summer Camps at THES!

Fine Arts Academy

Really work like the pros! In this creative setting, students get to dive into a rich range of materials including paint, ink drawings, collage, paper mache, and ceramics. At the end of camp, there will be a “Gallery Showcase” for parents and the community.

For students entering grades 3-6 the dates are June 10-14, 9am to 4pm, and the cost is $275.

For students entering grades 1-2 the dates are June 17-21, 9am to 1pm, and the cost is $175.

Shakespeare Camp

June 3–7, 7:30–3pm

Visit the world of Shakespeare, improve your writing, and learn how to write in cursive! Camp thespians will learn and share with voice and purpose. This is a fun way to continue their learning before you set off on summer vacation! Open to children ages 8-10 and the cost is $187 for the week. Apply today!

English Learners Summer Camp

June 3 – 28, 2019, 7:30am–1:30pm

This summer program provides opportunities to receive exciting and fun language development experiences to prepare students to be successful in kindergarten and first grade. Students who apply must be English language learners. They will be ON SITE registration on June 3rd. For more information click here or call 512-414-4821.

Code and Read, Dyslexia Services

Participate in therapy provided for novices and struggling reading students. Register for a minimum of three days each week and the total cost is $40/hour for THES families and returning students. The hourly rate will be divided by the number of students in the sessions and will be individually scheduled between the hours of 8am–12pm Monday – Thursday and will be held in Mrs. Maupin’s Reading Room at THES. Summer Reading Ideas

There’s something for everyone at Austin Public Library! From toddlers to teens: magic, robots, scavenger hunts, sewing, marionettes, puppets, tap dance, local music, stories, arts and crafts, board games, and a glow-in-the-dark dance party! See the schedule.

3rd-5th grades can get a jumpstart on the 2019 Bluebonnet Books!  Keep track of what you read for our back to school Bluebonnet Program. Please note:*The Bluebonnet books cover grades 3-6, some books may not be appropriate (reading level and maturity-wise) for 3rd graders to read on their own. Get the list!

Texas 2X2 books are recommended for age 2–grade 2, and we’ll be offering rewards for awesome readers when we return to school next year.  Get a head start!

Austin ISD is teaming up with Book People for a recommended reading list in English and Spanish for all levels. Check it out!

Barnes & Noble has a Summer Reading Program that earns you free books! More details here.

If you haven’t registered for next year, please do so now!

Make sure to register for the 2019-20 school year before this year ends. We are asking all parents to register their students online at my.austinisd.org. If you have trouble with the online registration process, please call the AISD Parent Technology Helpline at 512-414-9187 between 7am-5 pm, M-F.  If you need access to a computer, we have laptops available for parents to use in the office.

If you would like to opt out of paper fliers, please be sure to check the box on the front of our child’s Wednesday folder. Please help us reduce waste and save money!

    We will also need volunteers to help set up/break down and help run event stations. Volunteers for setup are needed at 7:30am and volunteers for break down would stay until around 11:15am. Any amount of volunteer time is appreciated!
