Wednesday Folder – March 13, 2019

Happy Wednesday Thunderbirds!

Spring is in the air, and SPRING BREAK is next week. We hope you have a FUN and SAFE week off from school!

Changes in HSR

You may have heard recently about AISD making changes to its Human Sexuality and Responsibility (HSR) curriculum. We understand this can be a sensitive topic in some families, and we want to be transparent with you so that you can make an informed choice about whether or not to have your child participate. Please find a letter from Principal Navarro in today’s Wednesday folder outlining these changes. As always, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact Principal Navarro by phone (512-414-4495) or email (michelle.amezquita-navarro@austinisd.org).

Festival of Colors

Friday, March 15, 9–11am, THES Field

Students from K–2nd grade will participate in a new THES event that promotes pride, unity, and confidence, while celebrating the colors of Spring. They will enjoy mini lessons in creating large scale art together, writing about being unique, yoga and breathing techniques, how to make a lava lamp, and Spring holidays around the world. There will be a fun run and dance party (pre-K will join in), and students who want to participate in the color throw must wear their Marathon Kids t-shirts!

THES Community Potluck

Monday, March 25, 5–7pm, THES Cafeteria

You’re invited! We want to celebrate our families and our community. Join us by bringing your favorite meal to share with others from the THES neighborhood!

Coffee Chat

Friday, March 29, 8am

Please join us for coffee and light breakfast. We will be answering questions about the Human Sexuality curriculum and continuing our discussion on Restorative Circles. See you there!

Appreciation PUMP, PUMP, PUMP, PUMP, PUMP!

I Heart THES Fundraiser

We raised a whopping $25,000 in February to support reading and other critical programs at our school. Wow! These funds will help get us new library books, software, reading materials, English language learning materials and more. Every person and business who donated is helping making our school an even more sustainable community. Thank you to all the donors and to the volunteers who made signs, greeted parents, sent emails and contacted businesses. If you didn’t get a chance to donate, make a gift today by visiting https://travisheightselementary.com/donate/ and help us get all the way up to $30,000. Every dollar counts!

Kerbey Lane Night

Thanks to everyone who ate queso and pancakes last Monday to benefit THES. Together we raised $500 to support our school! Thanks so much to Kerbey Lane Cafe on South Lamar and to the Fundraising Committee for setting this up. Look for more opportunities to eat delicious food and support THES soon!

Rummage Sale

The first annual THES Rummage Sale raised almost $2000 for our Parent Support Specialist and PTA! A big thank you to all our Thunderbirds and everyone who helped make the rummage sale a success — parents, teachers, staff, and neighbors who donated their gently used items for the sale, and our AMAZING volunteers who helped with set up and working at the sale. Special thanks to Maria Bergh and Anna Roth for their helping coordinate.  Based on the sale’s overall success, we hope to make it an annual event!

Beautification Day

A huge thank you to Ben Appl and his wife Deb Lykins for coordinating our Spring Beautification Day.  We also want to thank everyone who came out to help make our campus a beautiful place for our students to learn. We couldn’t do it without you!

Shamrock Dance

The Shamrock Dance was a huge success!  A big appreciation pump for THES parents Amarisa and Jaime Rodriguez for jumping in at the last minute to help coordinate it. A huge thanks also goes out to all of the 4th grade parents who donated items for the dance and their time!  We couldn’t have done it without everyone volunteering or bringing items. The kids had such a great time and we raised close to $2300 for the 4th grade Alamo trip!

THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR WONDERFUL FAMILIES, VOLUNTEERS, SPONSORS, AND STAFF FOR HELPING MAKING TRAVIS HEIGHTS ELEMENTARY THE BEST IT CAN BE!

If you would like to opt out of paper fliers, please be sure to check the box on the front of our child’s Wednesday folder. Please help us reduce waste and save money!
