Another Young Writer’s Workshop is on the books

I’ll step back for a moment to let the fabulous Ms. Walter tell you about last week’s events…

Last Thursday’s Young Writers Workshop marked its 20th year! It all started with a wonderful parent by the name of Susan Williamson. Susan was a writer who new many other writers who lived in the Travis Heights area. Several writers came to THES and presented their writing to the Travis Heights students. Students chose the writer they wanted to visit. At that time the writers included reporters, play writes, and Ben Sargent.

This year, under the leadership of THES parent and alum, Erin Walters, the tradition continued with some new adaptations. We had over twenty writers who were lyricists, game designers, rappers, poets, play writes, sports reporters, bloggers, marketing designers, and many more. There were two 50-minute workshop sessions that were interactive for our older students (3rd-5th graders). In addition, our younger students (PreK-2nd) listened and learned writing and cooking from Chef Louie (Kelly Crawford)! Each child received a book with stories and recipes.

Our writers were very excited and shared their student experiences over lunch brought by our wonderful parents. We are grateful to host this type of career learning for our school thanks to our parents, teacher, students, and volunteers!!

Keep on writing Thunderbirds!

Here are the writers who taught our students last Thursday:

LAURIE FILIPELLI, poet
ERICA FLORES, musician, Girls Rock Austin program director

Many people volunteered, sponsored the event, or made food or other donations. Give thanks to ABGB, Curra’s, and Ruta Maya Coffee when you can, to name just three! Here’s to our unique and wonderful community – and to writing!

Sincerely,
Erin Walter
