Luz Alvarez-Sims

My Email:

About Me:

Originally from El Paso, Mrs. Álvarez-Sims joined THES in 2014. She loves watching her students learn and grow throughout the year. Like her mother and grandmother, she guides her students to become lifelong learners. She loves being a dual language teacher and teaching in English and Spanish! It’s exciting to see two worlds open up for her students as they learn two languages. This upcoming year she will be working towards her Master’s degree at UT Austin.
Her favorite THES tradition is the Appreciation Pump and her favorite colors are green and pink. Mrs. Álvarez-Sims lives with her husband, their two kitties, Cleo and Gaius, and their puppy Obi. In her spare time she runs and loves to travel. She’s visited Mexico, Peru, France, and Italy.

Mrs. Marino has been at THES since 2005 and is a National Board Teacher. She has taught in 2nd through 4th grade here. She loves teaching reading and has completed her National Board Certification in Literacy and Reading. She is working on her graduate degree at The University of Texas. Mrs. Marino loves using project based learning and technology in the classroom. On Fridays, you can find her at morning assemblies performing with the Thunderband. She and her
husband Anthony have three children, Madeleine, Cameron, and Hayden and they spend their time together hiking, swimming, and playing games. Mrs. Marino spends a lot of her free time shopping, decorating, and crafting and creating clipart and teaching products to share with other teachers. Her favorite colors are teal and pink and her favorite place is Disney World!

Vanessa Sircy

My Email:

vanessa.sircy@austinisd.org

About Me:

Ms. Sircy came to THES in January of 2015 to teach the split 1st/2nd grade class and then made the jump to 4th grade and loves it. She is a graduate of The University of Arizona, has a master's degree from The University of Texas at Austin, and is a Licensed Master's Social Worker. One of her favorite things about THES is their wonderful school spirit. She enjoys getting to teach hands-on, student-centered project-based lessons! She loves
getting to build relationships with her students and getting to know each of their personalities. She encourages her students to believe in themselves by focusing on their strengths and hopes to empower them on their educational journey. When she’s not at school, Mrs. Sircy spends time with her family in Arizona and traveling the world with her husband.

Erika Villanueva

My Email:

erika.villanueva@austinisd.org

About Me:

Ms. Villanueva started at THES in 2008. She is a skilled 4th grade teacher with years of experience. She loves seeing the look in her students’ eyes when they make connections, and is passionate about taking them to the next level. Part of what makes THES so special to her is the community involvement. Ms. Villanueva’s journey to education is an inspiring story: after high school she worked several jobs, where she gained the confidence to attend the University of Texas. After dabbling in a few different studies, she fell in love with Mexican-American studies. The realization that teaching provided her a voice soon followed and the rest, as they say, is history. She is the first in her family to graduate from a university in the US. She always tells her students that “whatever you dream, it is achievable. Never tell yourself that you aren't good enough!”
