April–What’s been happening in 3rd grade?
Our outdoor learning experience for Earth Week: Checking our gardens and getting inspired to write haikus by the waterfall.
In third grade we have been working on our PBL (Project-Based Learning). We read the book City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau, about two children living in a post-apocalyptic world. In this novel, the world is dying. This lead us to our challenge: Invent a colony on another planet. We researched other planets in the Solar System and thought about the resources that would be needed in our new home. Then we mapped our new cities. In our culminating activity, we presented our “invented cities” to the class and everyone voted on which city they wanted to live in. Here are some of the many skills we learned about and used during this project:
- In Science, we have been learning about natural resources, how they can be made into useful products, and how they can be conserved.
- In Social Studies, we’ve been learning map skills. We’ve learned about the relationship between 2D models (maps) and real-world objects (buildings and roads). We’ve also been practicing using a grid to locate places on a map.
- In Math, we’ve learned about 2-D and 3-D shapes, and how to determine area and perimeter of surfaces.
Check out a few pictures from our project:
