This coming February will mark the 15th annual Young Writers’ Workshop at Travis Heights Elementary.  Over the past 14 years, the Young Writers’ Workshop has featured an exciting mix of novelists, poets, songwriters, cartoonists, journalists, academics, and others.  Not only our own talented parents but notables such as Sam Hurt, Sarah Brown, Jon Dee Graham, the late Molly Ivins, SXSW filmmaker David Modigliani, Spike Gillespie, award-winning novelist Scott Blackwood, and Ray Wylie Hubbard have contributed to the success of this event.

Each writer conducts two one-hour workshops with groups of third-, fourth-, and fifth-grade students.  Younger students are grouped by classroom with a writer.  We hope the students will come away from their sessions with an increased understanding of the many things writers do in the real world. We have found that this event has an impressive impact on our students’ perspectives about writers and writing
